Good morning,
Tomorrow, the power grid serving 67 million people across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic may see its highest electricity demand ever recorded, breaking a record that’s stood since 2006.
Here’s what’s driving it, and what else is on our radar today:
-
Grid emergency: PJM Interconnection is forecasting 166,304 MW of peak demand tomorrow. DOE has already issued emergency orders letting large data centers shift to backup power to keep the grid stable.
-
Heat emergency: Philadelphia declared a Code Red heat emergency; Extreme Heat Warnings are active across PA, NJ, DE, and parts of the central Plains, with heat indices well into the 100s through the July 4th weekend.
-
Also today: the nation’s largest wildfire (Cottonwood Fire, UT) posted its first containment progress in 11 days; Venezuela’s earthquake death toll continues climbing past 1,900; and a new geomagnetic storm watch could bring aurora as far south as New York this week.
We break all of this down daily so you’re not piecing it together from five different news alerts.
