The Ham Wilderness Protocol was proposed by William Alsup, N6XMW from Oakland, CA, who wrote in the February, 1994 edition of QST magazine. He proposed a Wilderness Protocol “for effective simplex use of handheld VHF and FM transceivers in the backcountry.” Since then it has been adopted not only for wilderness but any time you are not in range of a repeater. The national simplex frequencies are used, with the 146.520 MHz 2-meter simplex being the primary frequency.
The other side of the card lists the NOAA Weather Radio frequencies. These vary by area, with some overlapping depending on your location.
Add one of these cards to your radio bag, so you always have a reminder of the frequencies. Combine with the 2-meter, 70-cm and GMRS frequencies cards.
