This article references parts of the story in my fiction books; The Meadow Protocol (book 1), The Brush (book 2) and Unassigned Authority (book 3), part of The Continuity Chronicles series. Available in my store. How Space-Based Reconnaissance and Signals Interception Work Modern intelligence collection increasingly depends on space. Orbiting reconnaissance satellites can observe the Earth continuously, intercept communications signals, and monitor missile launches or naval activity anywhere on the planet. Much of this capability is coordinated within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which links the intelligence agencies of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The space-based portion of the system is largely operated by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) with signals processing performed by the National Security Agency (NSA) and allied organizations. The network includes several types of satellites: Signals intelligence (SIGINT) satellites that intercept communications and radar emissions Electro-optical imaging satellites that capture extremely detailed photographs of Earth Synthetic aperture radar satellites capable of imaging through clouds and darkness Naval electronic intelligence satellites that track ships via their electronic emissions Relay satellites that transmit collected intelligence back to Earth Together these systems create a global surveillance architecture spanning low Earth orbit, highly elliptical orbits,...
