Why This Course
It is 0410 and someone on your net is hurt. The man calling it in says they are “down past the second gate, by the creek, near the big oak.” Four people hear that transmission. One pictures the gate on the north track. One is thinking of a different creek entirely. One has never been past the first gate in his life. The fourth is already moving, in the wrong direction, with the medical bag.
Eleven minutes go by on the radio sorting out where. Those eleven minutes came out of the only budget that actually mattered that morning.
This is not a communications failure and it is not a discipline failure. Everybody on that net did their job. The failure is that the group never agreed on a way to name a place that means exactly one thing to everyone who hears it. Landmarks are personal. “The big oak” is a shared reference only among people who have already stood under it together, in daylight, recently. Under stress, at night, to a person who joined the group last month, it is noise.
A grid coordinate is the opposite. It is a short string of digits that resolves to one square of ground and no other, that can be written on a card, read aloud over a marginal radio link, repeated back for confirmation, and plotted by a person who has never set foot on your property. That is the skill this course builds, from the map margin up.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Plot any grid you are handed onto a paper topographic map to within ten meters, using only the map and a coordinate scale — no phone, no power, no signal.
- Produce a grid for your own position at four, six, eight, or ten digits, and state out loud which precision you are claiming and why that is the right one for what you are reporting.
- Fill the location line of a SALUTE, SITREP, or nine-line medical request so that the person receiving it can move to that spot without calling you back to ask what you meant.
- Catch a bad grid before you transmit it by cross-checking what a GPS or phone hands you against the terrain actually in front of you, and by recognizing the three errors that put a report in the wrong square.
- Convert your family’s and your group’s fixed locations into grids — home, work, school, rally points, water, caches — and build a pocket grid card that a twelve-year-old can read off correctly on the first attempt.
Where This Fits
NAV-01 is the foundation course for the Navigation series and a prerequisite skill for most reporting work elsewhere in the curriculum. Every course that asks you to report where something is — tactical reporting, observation post and listening post operations, contact and linkup planning — assumes you can already produce and read a grid. This course is where that assumption gets earned. It is also the course that turns a family emergency plan from a list of names into a list of places anyone in the household can actually find.

Each lesson ends with knowledge checks that must be answered correctly before the next lesson opens. Work them in order — each one is built on the one before it.
Lesson 01
Why “Near the Big Oak” Fails
What ambiguous location language actually costs, measured in minutes. The four location systems ordinary people already use — street address, latitude and longitude, proprietary word codes, and military grid — what each is genuinely good for, and why a group that has to operate without infrastructure needs to standardize on one of them before it needs it.
Lesson 02
Reading the Margin First
The information printed around the edge of a topographic map, which most people never look at: sheet name and number, scale and what it means in paces, contour interval, the declination diagram, the legend, and the adjoining-sheets index. Why the margin is the first thing you read and the reason a map without it is barely a map.
Lesson 03
Contours and Terrain
Reading shape from lines. The five major terrain features and the three minor ones, how contour spacing tells you slope, and how to look at a piece of paper and know what the ground will feel like underfoot. Terrain association is the sanity check that catches a grid in the wrong square before anyone acts on it.
Lesson 04
Anatomy of an MGRS Grid
Taking a full grid reference apart piece by piece: the grid zone designator, the 100,000-meter square identifier, and the numeric easting and northing. The four precision levels — 1,000 meters, 100 meters, 10 meters, 1 meter — what each one actually promises the recipient, and when claiming more precision than you have is a lie.
Lesson 05
Read Right, Then Up
The hands-on lesson. Extracting a grid from a map and plotting one onto it with a coordinate scale, and how to interpolate to a usable answer when you do not have one. The three errors that account for nearly every misplotted grid — transposition, a dropped square identifier, and false precision — and the habits that prevent each.
Lesson 06
Grids From Devices
Setting a handheld GPS or a phone to display MGRS, why the map datum has to match the paper you are plotting on, and how to convert between latitude/longitude and grid without introducing an error. Then the discipline that matters most: confirming a device’s grid against the terrain in front of you before you transmit it.
Lesson 07
Grids in Reports
Putting the skill to work. The location line in a SALUTE report, in a routine situation report, and in a nine-line medical request — three different jobs that need three different precisions. Matching precision to purpose, stating your reference when it is not obvious, and confirmation by readback as standard practice on every grid passed by voice.
Lesson 08
The Grid Card
Closing the loop back to your own situation. Converting every fixed location in your family plan and your group’s plan into grids — home, work, schools, rally points, water, caches, the nearest trauma center — and building a pocket card the whole household can read. Ends with the drill that proves it works.

One Standing Rule
Work this course on a map of your own ground, not a training extract of somewhere else. A grid you have plotted on terrain you can walk to is a skill. A grid you have plotted on a stranger’s valley is a party trick. The difference shows up the first time you have to do it for real, in the dark, on a map you have handled a hundred times.
