Food Storage & Preservation · FOD-05
Extended & Long-Term Food Storage
Dry staples packaged to last decades, stored where they can, and checked on a schedule you can account for.
Course Overview, One Page
A single printable page covering what FOD-05 teaches, the 6 lessons, and what you need before starting. Useful for deciding whether the course is for you, or for handing to somebody in your group who is weighing it up.
Why This Course
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Decide which of your stored foods belong in long-term storage and which belong in everyday rotation
- Seal Mylar bags reliably and size oxygen absorbers to what is actually inside them
- Recognize which foods are safe for low-oxygen packaging, and which must never be packed that way
- Choose a storage location by measured temperature and humidity, and set it up against light and pests
- Run a multi-year inspection, sample, and rotation schedule with a record you can account for
Lessons 01–06
What belongs in everyday rotation and what belongs in long-term storage, realistic shelf-life expectations by method, and how to size the long-term share of a stockpile.
Sealing bags reliably, sizing and handling oxygen absorbers, and the dry-foods-only rule that keeps low-oxygen packaging safe.
Food-grade buckets and gasketed lids, sizing sealed units to how fast you will use them once opened, and the containers that never belong in a food supply.
Temperature, humidity, light, and pests — choosing and setting up a storage location that lets packaging reach its rated life.
An annual inspection, sample openings, and planned batch rotation, kept separate from everyday rotation and backed by labels and a log.
Choose packaging and containers for your target stockpile, document your storage location, and build a multi-year check-and-reseal schedule.
How This Course Works
| Step | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Work through the lessons in order | Each lesson unlocks the next once its knowledge checks are answered correctly. |
| Start from your current storage | Lesson 1 begins with three items you already think of as long-term, and the capstone comes back to them. |
| Measure your storage location early | An inexpensive thermometer-hygrometer, logged through a warm and a cool stretch, feeds the Lesson 6 plan. |
| Complete the Lesson 6 capstone | Write your build-out plan: target stockpile, packaging, containers, location, schedule, and records. |
| Use the Course Map to return | Completed lessons stay open for review, and the certificate unlocks there once all six are done. |
