COM-15: Channel Code Matrix
Move a net between channels without ever saying a frequency on the air.
Why This Course
BLUF: Saying a frequency on the air tells every listener where your net went. The Channel Code Matrix replaces it with a two-letter code that changes daily. This course teaches where the rules let you use it, how to run it without error, and exactly what it does not protect.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Explain the difference between a brevity code, authentication and encryption
- Decide whether a code may be spoken on a given radio service under current FCC rules
- Convert a code to a channel and a channel to a code without error
- Recognize and handle an invalid code, a reversed code or a spare
- Generate, print, distribute, account for and destroy a sheet correctly
Lessons
Lesson 01
Brevity, Authentication, Encryption
What the matrix protects and what it does not: brevity versus authentication versus encryption, and where it sits beside COM-04 EMCON.
Lesson 02
Where You Can Use It
The FCC rules by radio service. Why codes stay off amateur and GMRS, and what FRS, MURS and CB rules do and do not say.
Lesson 03
Anatomy of a Sheet
The period-fixed grid, the daily key, spares, the no-repeat rule, and crossing off each channel once it is used.
Lesson 04
On the Air
Sending and receiving codes, the phonetics on the sheet, handling bad codes, and the midnight problem.
Lesson 05
Sheet Lifecycle and Capstone Net
Size and generate a sheet in Ready Ledger, print, issue, account for and destroy it, handle a compromise, and run a coded net.
How This Course Works
| Format | Five self-paced online lessons with worked examples, scenarios and reveal drills. |
| Knowledge checks | Three per lesson, spaced through the reading. From Lesson 02 on, the first one retrieves an earlier lesson. Answer all three correctly to unlock the next lesson. |
| Figures | Every lesson carries numbered diagrams — decision gates, decode pipelines and the sheet lifecycle — that show the method as well as describe it. |
| Tools | Ready Ledger (Communications → Security & Encryption) for the lifecycle lesson; paper and pencil for everything else. |
| Companion guide | Blank grids, day keys, drill sheets and the controlled-copy log, available from the Course Map. |
| Certificate | Unlocks once all five lessons are complete, available from the Course Map. |
