PLN-08: Ethics Under Pressure
Decision-Making Before the Crisis
Course Overview, One Page
A single printable page covering what PLN Series teaches, the 8 lessons, what you need before starting, and the doctrinal sources behind the method. Useful for deciding whether the course is for you, or for handing to somebody in your group who is weighing it up.
Why This Course
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Recognize the value tension in a disaster ethics dilemma without needing it pointed out
- Explain how your answer would change under different scale, horizon, and household conditions
- Distinguish capability from training from authorization in a medical-response context
- Articulate your own, or your MAG’s, pre-considered position on allocation, medical scope, force threshold, and authority — in writing, before an event requires it
Lessons
Sets up the three lenses and three axes — scale, horizon, household — used throughout the course.
Three rationing logics, the horizon trap, and who’s actually asking at the door.
Capability, training, and authorization — and what disappears when oversight does.
“We can’t” versus “we won’t,” and who has standing to decide.
Why the acceptable use of force moves as social order degrades.
A MAG leader’s fiduciary-style duty and the noncompliant-member problem.
Re-runs earlier dilemmas across combinations of all three axes at once.
Capstone: a written position on allocation, medical scope, force, and authority.
How This Course Works
| Format | Discussion-based, not a quiz on rules. Every scenario has real tension in more than one direction, and no lesson hands you a single correct resolution. |
| Knowledge Checks | Each lesson gates on understanding the reasoning behind a framework — not on picking the “correct” moral answer. |
| The three axes | Event scale, recovery horizon, and household composition recur in every lesson and change the weight of a dilemma without changing the dilemma itself. |
| Capstone | Lesson 08 turns the course into a written position paper for your household or MAG, tested against a specific scenario rather than left in the abstract. |
| Use it as a group | The scenarios work as MAG discussion-night material, with or without every participant having completed the online lessons first. |
