Disasters and emergencies happen all the time. From tornadoes, hurricanes, severe storms or other natural disasters that leave you without power or clean water to the most recent situation of COVID-19 that caused many to be furloughed or lose their jobs. Having a plan and being prepared can lessen the impacts of these events on your family.
Having a family emergency plan means you all know where to go or meet. Having a communications plan means you can get in contact with your family when the emergency or disaster happens, even if the power and cell phones go out. Having important documents saved and backed up, having a “go bag” in case you have to leave your home with almost no notice. Having a “get home bag” in your vehicle means you have the tools, supplies and equipment to keep you safe if you are stranded in a winter storm. Keeping one at work if you use public transportation in case you have to walk home because of a widespread power outage. Having 72-hours worth of food and supplies in our house is the absolute minimum. These are the basics that every family should have.
The “next level” is having at least 3 months of food supplies at home and at least 72 hours of water and the means to make other water safe to drink. Once you have 3 months, keep building to 6 months, then 12. Learning to grow and store your own food and not be reliant on the “just-in-time” deliveries to grocery stores is also important. We have seen how fragile the system is with the interruption in the delivery system during COVID-19, when everyone in the country is trying to buy supplies at the same time, and the system can’t keep up with demand. Consider what happens during a power failure; stores can’t sell anything when the computers don’t work.
